Leg Veins

Thread veins on the legs are a common problem in men and women. Even if they are not causing discomfort, there are not aesthetically pleasing and can cause embarrassment socially, can restrict peoples choice of clothing and cause distress on holidays or during sporting activities such as swimming. Thread veins are largely inherited. They are also hormone related and can get worse in pregnancy and on hormone replacement therapy. They can also result from trauma or remain after surgery for varicose veins.

At Body Benefits we treat the surface veins such as spider veins, telangiectasia and their feeder veins. Larger varicose veins can be referred for hospital assessment and treatment by a vascular surgeon.

There are a number of systems to treat superficial veins such as vascular I.P.L., Vascular Laser and MicroSclerotherapy. At Body Benefits, we offer all options and after a thorough consultation and assessment of your legs, we will advise you on the best method of treatment for your particular problem.

MICRO-SCLEROTHERAPY

MicroSclerotherapy is a safe, painless and well established treatment for thread veins on the legs. It is often combined with vascular laser therapy to offer the best possible results. Sclerotherapy involves a solution being injected with a tiny needle, very superficially into the veins, causing the lining of the vein to break down. This damage to the vein wall triggers a healing response which over several weeks causes the vein to close and fade. A thorough Sclerotherapy consultation/patch test is required before treatment to ensure patient suitability for treatment.

Sclerotherapy is relatively painless, and any questions or concerns a patient may have will be fully addressed during the consultation. The number of treatments required will be estimated and advice will be offered whether or not combination Laser/Sclerotherapy Treatments would be the best option.

Nd-Yag Vascular Laser

What is a long pulsed Nd:YAG laser?
An Nd:YAG laser is a solid state laser capable of producing a near-infrared wavelength that penetrates deep into the skin and is readily absorbed by haemoglobin.  By using a long pulse duration and an appropriate spot size, it is possible to treat large blood vessels and vascular lesions. At Body Benefits, we can treat a variety vessels in the superficial system, not only eliminating the very surface thread veins or tiny telangiectasia but also closing the feeder vessels supplying them, leaving legs looking clearer and healthier.

How does a long pulsed Nd:YAG laser work?

Our Vascular Laser delivers precise dosages of energy to each vein, with minimal risk to the skin. The energy is absorbed by the blood vessels causing thermocoagulation. The damaged vessel is then slowly absorbed by the body.  The number of treatments required will depend on the number of vessels to be removed.  This can be estimated during the consultation and pricing options and course packages can be arranged to suit.

Vascular IPL

For the tiny surface blood vessels which are too small to be either injected, or picked up by a Vascular Laser – we also have a Vascular IPL System.  The Vascular IPL has the ability to target tiny surface vessels which can often appear as a red blush and can become more apparent to the patient after the larger vessels have been removed.  The majority of our patients will opt for combination treatments as many people have a wide range of visible blood vessels of varying sizes and depths which they want removed.

What causes thread veins and varicose veins?

50% of the population will develop problems with their leg veins during their life. In most cases there is a family history so the cause is likely to be genetic. Women in particular find the appearance of thread veins quite distressing but can be reassured that:-
· though unsightly they are unlikely to cause symptoms or medical problems
· they can be treated and their appearance significantly improved
We offer a thorough assessment of your veins to exclude underlying problems in order to offer the best treatment option to you.

What results can I expect?

With Micro-Sclerotherapy, the results are not immediate. The veins look worse before they get better and the treatment may need to be repeated at. Most patients see a 60% – 80% improvement in the appearance of the veins and these results may be improved by combining with Vascular Laser Therapy.

Are the results permanent?
The veins that are successfully treated will not recover but this is a treatment for the symptoms not a cure for the underlying causes, so new veins may develop over time.

Is this a safe treatment?
This is a very safe treatment carried out by an Aesthetic Specialist Nurse who is trained and experienced in this technique. However, as with any other intervention, it is not entirely without risk and is not suitable for everyone. The Nurse will take a medical history and discuss the possible risks/complications

Is there any special aftercare?

You may resume normal activities immediately. After Micro-Sclerotherapy you will be given special medical compressions hosiery to wear for 14 days after the treatment. This looks like normal hosiery and you will have a choice of colours and styles. You will be advised to take a 10 min walk immediately afterwards, to avoid high impact exercise for two weeks, no steaming hot baths, showers, saunas or sunbeds for two weeks and no leg waxing for 4 weeks. Please discuss any long haul travel plans within 4 weeks.
